Curriculum K-8
OVERVIEW
Mission Statement
At Reverend Brown School, we’re committed to educating children for the future. In a climate of love and respect for self and others, our students are taught positive, worthwhile values. With an emphasis on basic skills, your child’s intellectual growth occurs in an atmosphere where the Gospel messages are incorporated into all subject areas. Acceptance of others, cooperation through peer interactions, and an awareness of the call to live life responsibly are concepts formed in the home and reinforced at Rev. Brown School. As educators-parents, pastors, priests, and teachers-we encourage the students to grow and mature into responsible members of the school, the church, the family, and the world community.
Religious Education
As a Catholic school, we impart knowledge and understanding of the basic teachings of the Catholic faith. Religious education is an important part of the daily curriculum for all our students. All members of God’s family participate in First Friday Mass, liturgies, prayer services, and preparation for the sacraments. Reconciliation is scheduled for students in grades 3-8 throughout the school year. Students are encouraged to become involved in outreach programs for the needy, service projects within the community, and in social justice issues.
Curriculum
The curriculum at Rev. Brown School provides a well-rounded, balanced educational program which conforms to both diocesan and state standards. The full day kindergarten introduces children to a wide range of concepts and skills through exploration and discovery of God’s world in a warm, encouraging environment.
In the early primary grades, children work cooperatively in small groups with others who have similar abilities and levels of learning in reading, language, math, and science. Students learn fundamental skills such as listening, organization, and careful note-taking. Study skills and independent work habits are developed throughout the grades. In the junior high, we offer advanced instruction in math for those students who qualify. The Language Arts program in the upper grades integrates the skills of reading, writing, listening, and speaking into a comprehensive critical thinking skills format.
In addition to core academics, computers are incorporated into the curriculum. Children receive instruction in the classroom and in The Technology Center.
Art, music, and physical education go hand in hand with the academic program, fostering creativity and developing the student’s special interests and talents. The cultural arts program stresses participation, understanding, and art appreciation. The physical education program offered from grades K-8 teaches sportsmanship, teamwork, and discipline.
Field trips, assemblies, clubs, special contests, concerts, and Christian service activities complement classroom instruction.
